Funding

The following notes on funding opportunities are for guidance only. For fuller information you should consult the University’s Graduate Studies Prospectus. All awards/scholarships are offered on a competitive basis and candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for the relevant scheme for which they wish to be considered.

1. William Wyse Studentship

In 2012 we can offer one 3- year William Wyse studentship for UK, EU, and overseas candidates applying for PhD studies. The award will be made on a competitive basis. Candidates applying for the William Wyse Studentship should meet the eligibility criteria for either CISS or ESRC funding and submit the GRADSAF according the relevant deadline set by the Board of Graduate Studies. Closing date for receiving applications and references is 1 December 2011 (Further information available here).

2. Cambridge Trusts

This scholarship scheme is available to candidates from the Commonwealth and outside the European Union.

Those seeking financial support through the Cambridge Trusts should submit their graduate application form (GRADSAF) to the Board of Graduate Studies by 2 December 2011. (Further details available from the Board of Graduate Studies fees and funding web page at: http://www.cambridgetrusts.org/.

3. CHESS (Cambridge Home and EU Scholarship Scheme)

Open to all UK/EU candidates who will be automatically considered providing they have applied for admission (GRADSAF) by 13 February 2012. Further details available from the Board of Graduate Studies webpage at: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/fees/funding/chess/phd.html.

4. The Gates Cambridge Trust

Open to students from all countries except the UK. Candidates who wish to be considered for a scholarship should submit their graduate application form (GRADSAF) to the Board of Graduate Studies by the following deadlines:

US citizens – 15 October 2011
Non US citizens  – 2 December 2011
US citizens already studying at Cambridge University – 2 December 2011

5. Cambridge International Scholarships Scheme (CISS)

This award is offered to overseas students who embark on a research course. The deadline to apply for admission is 2 December 2011. Application is through the GRADSAF form (Further information is available from the Board of Graduate Studies fees and funding webpage at: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/fees/funding/ciss).

6. William Wyse Bursary

This Bursary is intended for UK and EU students who wish to pursue the MPhil in Social Anthropology. Closing date for receiving applications is 1 December 2011. (Further information available here).

7. ESRC funding

All eligible candidates for study will be considered by the Division of Social Anthropology providing your graduate application form (GRADSAF) is received by the Board of Graduate Studies by 13 January 2012. Award holders must complete the one year research course, MRes in Social Anthropology before proceeding to the PhD. Please tick the relevant box on the application form, which states ‘I wish to be considered for Research Council funding’.
