Department of Social Anthropology

Breakfast, Sinai Desert

We are delighted that the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge has been consistently rated top Anthropology department in the world by students and academics.

The Department of Social Anthropology at Cambridge has been rated the best in the world for Anthropology in the influential global rankings by the 2024 Guardian Guide to University and the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS World University Rankings) https://www.theguardian.com/higher-education-network/2018/feb/28/qs-world-university-rankings-2018-anthropology.

UK universities as a whole have done well in the rankings this year, especially in the arts and humanities, but even so, only ten departments from all UK Universities have been ranked first in their particular academic subject in these global higher-education rankings.

We are particularly pleased that this international acclaim follows the recent recognition of our success by the University in re-establishing Social Anthropology as an independent department once again at the University of Cambridge.

Social Anthropology, at Cambridge University, has also been rated the number one Department by the Complete University Guide using a range of 10 different criteria including entry standards, research quality and graduate prospects. It is the only UK Department to receive an overall score of 100. https://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings?s=Anthropology

WhatUni also ranked Social Anthropology at Cambridge as the top destination in the UK for a PhD in the subject.   https://www.whatuni.com/postgraduate-courses/search?q=social-anthropology&sort=crh
