Becoming Shamans to be Healed
This Project explored the unusual increase in the number of Horchin shamans by focusing on “shamanic illnesses” and self-healing process. The project sought to: identify which disorders are seen as ‘shamanic illnesses’ in the contemporary Horchin Mongolian cultural environment; who develops them and what the socio-political, economic and cultural causes are; identify and analyse the processes and therapeutic effects of shamanic self-healing; analyse people's perceptions of the therapeutic benefits and effect on wellbeing, as well as the negative effects of shamanic healing.
