“After Us, Who Will Care for Them?”: Intellectual Disability in South India

For my post-doctoral position in the Max-Cam Centre, I am working with families who have a member with intellectual PMckearney6950disabilities in the South Indian state of Kerala. As parents grow older, they consistently report a pressing and persistent concern: how their children will get by when they themselves are gone. My research explores how different families, NGOs, and governmental programmes respond to this problem by navigating the numerous ways in which responsibility for care can be distributed and alleviated in Kerala through affinity, work, marriage, property, and charity.
