Department of Social Anthropology

Introduction to the Group

Here is the reading list for our CUSAS reading group this term (Michaelmas 2023), focusing on medical anthropology. I (Sam) have tried to choose eight monographs with some shared themes to help comparison between the texts, although there is no need to attend every session or read every book cover to cover. I’ve tried to include some podcasts and shorter resources if you’re debating whether to commit to a text! The pattern is roughly to begin with looking at care, particularly in relation to coloniality, and from there look at two more specific topics that are connected by region psychiatry, in particular pediatric psychiatric care in North America. I have some ideas for maybe continuing in Lent term if it goes well but feel free to add more suggestions at the bottom of this document.

In terms of logistics, our aim is to meet every other week at 7:30pm at the Mill pub on Thursdays I’ve set up a WhatsApp group to coordinate. If you’d like to be added, send me a message on +44 7943898672 or ss2763@cam.ac.uk
