Anthropology Beyond the Academy seminar

On writing as an anthropologist

Anthropologists write a lot, more than many other scholars, and arguably, our monographs often are as beautifully crafted and accessible as novels. Our discipline is prone to produce good writers - but are we taking our skills we work so hard to cultivate, as far as we could? In this multi-faceted series of conversations, we want to open up some of the potential avenues of how (anthropological) writing can be developed, beyond the academy. Led by our alumnus Dr Johannes Lenhard and with participation from two journalists, Anna Wiener (New Yorker) and Mark Bergen (Bloomberg) we will explore this question further.

Anna Wiener is a contributing writer to The New Yorker. Her first book, “Uncanny Valley,” a memoir of her time in the tech industry, was published in 2020. She lives in San Francisco.

Mark Bergen is a journalist with Bloomberg News and Businessweek. He's reported from San Francisco, India, China, Hong Kong, and now London, where he covers European venture capital, tech and media. He's the author of the 2022 book "Like, Comment, Subscribe: Inside YouTube's Chaotic Rise to World Domination."
