Department of Social Anthropology

After stumbling into anthropology via economics/management and sociology around ten years ago, Johannes has focused in his research (and practical work) on two topics as different as they could be, at least on the surface: his PhD and postgrad work before that was focused on the survival and home-making practices of people experiencing homeless people in London and Paris; over the last four years, he has on the other hand spend time with and interviewed more than 250 venture capital investors who finance the future of our economy, from Uber and Google to Facebook and Amazon. How do these two areas hang together (hint: ethics)? How does one stretch these kind of divergent research fields (in practice, in one’s mind)? What does one ‘do’ with this kind of research beyond the academia (hint: ‘impact work’ and journalism)?

Dr Johannes Lenhard is an ethnographer of venture capital and homelessness and currently Centre Coordinator, Research Associate and Associated Lecturer at the Max Planck Cambridge Centre for Ethics, Economy and Social Change at the University of Cambridge (UK); he teaches at Cambridge in Anthropology, Sociology and Economics. Lenhard has a decade of first-hand research experience, won multiple research grants for his work and is widely published both in academic and journalistic outlets. He also has extensive work experience in the world of venture capital investment and strategy consulting. Over the last two years, he has spoken at many academic and industry conferences on VC ethics, ESG and also homelessness. The monograph on his work with people experiencing homelessness in Paris - Making Better Lives - as well as his book on diversity, equity and inclusion in VC - Better Venture - are about to be published in early 2022.
