Co-creating Fertilizing Mourning, a workshop by Eliana Otta

In the workshop, the artist Eliana Otta will introduce the participants to the intuitions and concerns that led her to conceive her work Fertilizing Mourning, a concept in the making which has to be brought to life through communal practice. After a brief talk, Eliana will share fragments of a manifesto she wrote, and lead a writing exercise for participants to reflect on their own experiences. In the workshop, she will discuss the limits of empathy and raise the question of whether we need to know someone or something personally to feel their loss as ours. She will invite participants to write about a person or being unknown to them, whose loss has the power to affect them. The workshop will culminate with the creation of imaginary flowers, and adding them to a collective commemorative garden.

One of two workshops organised by the Decolonise Cambridge Anthropology Society in collaboration with CUSAS and the Department of Social Anthropology.

Attendance is capped at 15 places per workshop and preference will be given to taught PG students of the Department of Social Anthropology, but it is open to everyone.
